Can Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) Reduce my Wrinkles?

If you’re looking for a minimally invasive way to fight wrinkles and other noticeable signs of aging, it’s time to learn about the benefits of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF).
At Yco Facial Plastic Surgery in Encinitas, California, we offer PRF treatments in the office. With PRF therapy, Mario Yco, MD, can use substances from your own body to help restore your youthful appearance and enhance the overall health of your skin.
The basics of platelet-rich fibrin
Platelet-rich fibrin is a concentrated solution made up of platelets, growth factors, fibrinogens, stem cells, and white blood cells. These powerful elements, which help the body rebuild and regenerate tissue, reside in your blood.
Dr. Yco gets these elements by taking a sample of your blood and putting it in a centrifuge. The centrifuge then spins your blood and separates the elements from the other components in your blood. Dr. Yco then injects the resulting solution into areas of your skin that are wrinkled or creased.
Then, the platelets and other elements in the solution bind together to create a cellular structure known as a fibrin scaffold. The fibrin scaffold then helps the growth factors and other elements improve the health and smoothness of your skin.
Other benefits of PRF treatments
In addition to treating wrinkles and creases, Dr. Yco may recommend PRF therapy to address other aesthetic issues that can become more common with aging. These issues include:
- Lost facial volume
- Deep facial folds
- Sagging tear troughs
- Dark circles
- Sunspots
- Age spots
Platelet-rich fibrin therapy is also an effective way to improve the symmetry of your face to enhance your overall facial aesthetic. Furthermore, if you have slow-healing wounds, PRF injections can support their healing.
What to expect during PRF treatments
As mentioned, Dr. Yco first draws a sample of your blood and puts it in a centrifuge to get a concentration of platelets and other power elements in your blood. Then, he injects the PRF solution into specific areas of your face.
He can apply a topical anesthetic to your skin to minimize pain during your injections. After your injections, you may have redness, soreness, and mild bruising at the injection sites. These issues should resolve on their own in a few days.
You can go back to your usual activities right away without limitations. While you won’t see immediate results from your PRF therapy, you should start to see a difference in wrinkles, age spots, and other skin flaws within a few weeks of your treatment. As the fibrin scaffolds continue to build, your results should continue to improve.
In addition to PRF treatments, Dr. Yco can also recommend other nonsurgical strategies you can use to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, such as facial fillers, microneedling, and CO2 laser skin resurfacing treatments.
