What Are Chin Implants?
A chin implant procedure refers to the refinement or enhancement of the bone contour in the chin area of the face. In most cases, this improvement is accomplished by the insertion of a specially fitted implant directly on the bone of the chin. This procedure is most commonly done to correct, or enhance, an unprojected chin. The size and projection of the chin are directly related to facial harmony, which is why this procedure is so common for balancing the features of the face.

Who Is a Candidate for Chin Implants?
Candidates for Chin implants include those individuals who have an unprojected or underdeveloped chin and wish to give it more prominence. This procedure is great for restoring balance and symmetry to the face, as chin projection is directly related to the size of the nose. For example, a small chin may make the nose appear larger. A chin implant can also add more definition and contour to the jawline, in addition to reducing the appearance of a full, double chin. Those wishing to undergo any cosmetic procedure should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations regarding the outcomes of a chin implant procedure. The best way to determine your candidacy is by scheduling a consultation with Dr. Yco at Your Cosmetic Office.
Chin Implant Procedure
A chin implant can be performed asleep or awake via the use of general or local anesthesia. Dr. Yco will begin by making an incision either underneath the chin or on the inside of the mouth. Once space has been made for the implant, Dr. Yco will fit the implant around the chin bone before closing up your incisions with sutures. A chin implant can be performed as a stand-alone procedure or can be combined with other plastic surgery procedures like a facelift or rhinoplasty.
Post-Op Care
Immediately following your chin implant procedure, you may experience some slight swelling, bruising, and tenderness. These symptoms can be managed with pain medication and a cold compress, but will likely diminish after about a week. You will be required to sleep in an elevated position for 1-2 weeks following your procedure to reduce the likelihood of swelling. You may also be asked to stick to a liquid diet during this time to minimize any movement in the chin area. For 3-4 weeks after surgery, you will need to avoid any strenuous activities, especially those that could potentially injure your chin. In addition to following all post-operative instructions, Dr. Yco may recommend hyperbaric Co2 treatments or red light therapy to help optimize your recovery.
