Beyond Botox: What Are the Neuromodulators on the Market and How doThey Differ?

Botox® is a well-known prescription injectable that can tackle deep-set creases around your eyes and across your brow. But, did you know there are other products that work similarly and are FDA-approved to address age-related wrinkles and lines?
At Yco Facial Plastic Surgery in Encinitas, California, our skilled facial plastic surgeon Mario Yco, MD, offers a range of nonsurgical services to refresh your face and revitalize your appearance.
Dr. Yco can use Botox and other neuromodulators to help you achieve your overall cosmetic goals without incisions or downtime.
What to know about neuromodulators
Neuromodulators describe wrinkle-smoothing injections of botulinum toxin type A. In small amounts, this toxin can temporarily relax the muscles responsible for certain facial wrinkles and creases, so your skin can look smoother and more youthful.
The results of treatment with neuromodulators typically last for three months or longer before you need additional injections.
Botox is the most recognized brand of neuromodulator on the market today, but it’s not your only choice for fighting common age-related skin flaws, such as crow’s feet and frown lines.
Beyond Botox
In addition to Botox, there are other injectable botulinum toxin products that can improve your facial aesthetic. While there are similarities between the other neuromodulators, there are some differences, too.
Beyond Botox, the other neuromodulators include:
Dysport
Dysport® was FDA-approved in 2009 to treat frown lines. It’s as potent as Botox, but it’s highly effective at treating larger areas, such as your forehead. This injectable may not be suitable for people with milk allergies, because it contains lactose and cow’s milk proteins.
Dysport provides results that last 3-4 months before you need maintenance injections.
Xeomin
Xeomin® received the FDA’s approval for treating frown lines and muscle spasticity in 2011. It differs from Botox in that it doesn’t blend botulinum toxin with proteins, so it doesn’t require refrigeration. The room temperature injections may be more comfortable for people, especially those with sensitivities.
Xeomin may be an option for people who don’t respond well to Botox or Dysport. This injectable provides results that last 3-4 months.
Jeuveau
Jeuveau® was FDA-approved in 2019 to treat frown lines and crow’s feet. It offers similar results to Botox, and it can last 3-6 months.
A potential drawback of Jeuveau is its newness, because there’s minimal data about its long-term safety and effectiveness.
Daxxify
Daxxify is the first and only FDA approved peptide-powered neuromodulator with a median duration of 6 months and in some patients up to 9 months, based on the largest phase 3 clinical study of neuromodulators on glabellar lines ever conducted.. Daxxify uses a proprietary peptide technology to deliver the longest lasting results in the industry.
Choosing the right neuromodulator for you
Depending on the severity of your wrinkles and creases, Dr. Yco determines which neuromodulator product is right for you. He customizes a treatment plan for your needs to ensure natural-looking, long-lasting results.
During your treatment, Dr. Yco injects precise amounts of the chosen neuromodulator into your face. He targets specific muscles that play a role in frown lines and crow’s feet, so they relax fully, and your skin smooths out.
When the results of your treatment begin to wane, Dr. Yco can bring you back in for maintenance injections to help you maintain your more youthful appearance. He also offers dermal fillers and other nonsurgical therapies that can complement your neuromodulator therapy.
