Rhinoplasty Q & A
What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job,” is a procedure to reconstruct your nose to enhance symmetry and overall facial harmony, or to correct structural issues to improve breathing. Rhinoplasty can fix several aesthetic problems, including:
- Nasal asymmetry
- Facial balance and proportion
- Nose profiles with visible bumps or humps
- Large nostrils
- Width and length of your nose
- A bulbous or upturned nose tip
- A hooked nose
With rhinoplasty, Dr. Yco can adjust your nose so it appears more balanced with the rest of your facial features or correct functional issues, such as a deviated septum, to help you breathe more easily.
How does rhinoplasty correct a deviated septum?
Sometimes men or women get rhinoplasty to correct a deviated septum. That means the internal structure of your nose is somehow obstructing your ability to breathe freely and easily. A deviated septum is one of the most common causes of breathing problems.
If you have a deviated septum, Dr. Yco corrects your nose internally by straightening the cartilage or removing any blockage to improve airflow. You can also fix a deviated septum while simultaneously reshaping the appearance of your nose if needed.
How is rhinoplasty performed?
During a rhinoplasty procedure, Dr. Yco makes incisions through the inside of your nose to access the bone and cartilage. In some cases, he may also make incisions across the outside of your nose between your nostrils. Depending on what you need, he can reshape or reduce the cartilage into the desired form and proportion.
If part of your nose is too small, Dr. Yco can reconstruct it using cartilage from your septum, or even your ear, to create the desired size and look. Once the angles, width, and shape of your enhanced nose are in place, Dr. Yco redrapes the tissue and skin over the new structure and closes the incisions.
How long does it take to recover from rhinoplasty?
After surgery, recovery takes several weeks or longer. The initial swelling usually subsides in a couple of weeks, but it takes some time for your nose to adjust to its new contours. For up to a year after rhinoplasty, you may experience intermittent swelling, but it’s usually minimal and well tolerated.
Dr. Yco monitors your progress after your surgery to ensure your optimal comfort as you recover. If necessary, a member of Dr. Yco’s team can suction your nasal passages so you can breathe more easily while the swelling subsides.
If you’ve always wanted to improve the appearance of your nose, breathe easier, or need surgery after an injury, call the office or schedule your rhinoplasty consultation using the online booking tool.
