Blepharoplasty Q & A

What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty corrects droopy eyelids in both form and function. This surgery aims to restore your vision and to remove the bags from under your eyes so you don’t appear tired all of the time. Dr. Yco can perform blepharoplasty on your upper eyelids, lower lids, or both.

Blepharoplasty can treat various issues, including:

  • Loose or sagging skin of the upper eyelid
  • Puffy eyelids
  • Under-eye bags and puffiness
  • Drooping lower eyelids

Who is a good candidate for blepharoplasty?

If you’re in overall good health, a non-smoker, and you don’t have severe conditions like glaucoma, dry eyes, or thyroid problems, you may be a good candidate for blepharoplasty. It’s also important to have realistic goals for what eyelid surgery can accomplish.

If your vision has become impaired, or your eyelids are continually sagging, this may be the procedure that’s right for you.

In some cases, Dr. Yco performs blepharoplasty in conjunction with face-lift surgery, an eyebrow lift, or laser skin resurfacing. It all depends on your individual needs and desired outcome, as Dr. Yco and the team at YCO Facial Plastic Surgery create a customized treatment plan to help you accomplish your goals.

What can I expect during and after the procedure?

If Dr. Yco is operating on your upper lids, he carefully cuts along the fold of your eyelid and removes excess skin and fat before closing the incision.

If he’s correcting your lower lids, he makes an incision just below your eyelashes to remove fat, muscle, and sagging skin as needed. Once Dr. Yco performs surgery on both eyes, you spend some time in the recovery room before going home.

After your blepharoplasty procedure, you may experience any of the following temporary conditions:

  • Watery eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Double vision
  • Puffy, swollen eyelids
  • Pain and discomfort around your eyes

All of these side effects are temporary and usually resolve within a couple of days. Cool compresses may help with swelling or to relieve pain. Dr. Yco and his team instruct you on how to care for your eyes immediately following surgery. Once you recover, you’ll look years younger and more awake than before.
