What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a skin resurfacing treatment that can help to reduce the appearance of common signs of aging on the face. It can also help fade acne scars, stretch marks, and other texture concerns. Microneedling treatments, also called percutaneous collagen induction therapy, work by making tiny, controlled punctures in the skin. These micro-injuries do not damage or scar the skin but rather stimulate our bodies’ natural wound-healing response, resulting in an increase in collagen production through a process called dermal remodeling.

Who Is a Candidate for Microneedling?

The ideal candidates for microneedling treatments are those individuals seeking to treat a variety of skin conditions such as wrinkles, fine lines, depressions from acne scars, surgical scars, burn scars, stretch marks, and enlarged pores. Because microneedling treatments do not rely on heat energy to treat the skin, those with hyperpigmentation issues, such as dark spots, may benefit from this treatment without the risk of worsening their pigmentation problems. Microneedling can also be used to make topical treatments more effective. Those treating hair loss problems may find that microneedling enhances their results. Microneedling Procedure

To begin your microneedling procedure, Dr. Yco will apply a lidocaine numbing cream to your face. This will sit for about 30-45 minutes to make sure it has taken effect before treatment starts. Next, he will use a handheld device to make the tiny micro-punctures all over the treatment area. He will move it across the face very gently and slowly to ensure even treatment. This treatment is highly customizable as the depth of the punctures can be changed to accommodate deeper scars or to make the treatment more comfortable. Treatment takes about 15 minutes.

Post-Op Care

Microneedling is an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home right away once your treatment concludes. Immediately following the procedure, your skin might be red and swollen for up to five days. A cold compress can be used to ease any discomfort. For some people, their skin may become dry and flaky as it heals. If this is the case for you, a gentle moisturizer can be used to help. Because your skin is more vulnerable following treatment, you will want to stay out of the sun. Most patients need multiple microneedling treatments spaced 3-8 weeks apart.
