What Is Botox? 

Botox is the most widely known botulinum toxin type A injectable that can temporarily smooth wrinkles and lines on the face. Botulinum toxin type A is a neurotoxin that temporarily prevents muscle movement by disrupting the signals between the nerves and muscles. Botox injections result in more relaxed facial muscles that no longer contribute to wrinkles caused by repeated facial movements like scowling, scrunching, squinting, or frowning. Per the dentist’s order, Botox can even be used to treat TMJ by relaxing the muscles in the jaw.

Who Is a Candidate for Botox? 

The ideal candidate for Botox injections is someone who wishes to correct signs of aging on the face that have been caused by dynamic and repeated facial movements. These signs can include glabellar lines, crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, and marionette lines. Because of the relaxing effect Botox has on the muscles, it can also be used to treat conditions like TMJ which can be caused by tight muscles. It is important that anyone wishing to receive Botox injections does not have a botulinum toxin allergy. The best way to determine your candidacy is by scheduling an appointment with Dr. Yco at Your Cosmetic Office.   

Botox Treatment 

You will receive your Botox injections in office at Your Cosmetic Office. Dr. Yco will begin by cleansing the skin before using a thin gauge needle to inject a tiny amount of the botulinum toxin into your skin and muscles. The amount of product needed will depend on the area, or areas, that are being treated. Generally, treatments with Botox take anywhere from 15-45 minutes. 

Post-Op Care 

Immediately following treatment with Botox, you may experience some mild tenderness and bruising, but this should subside after a few days. For the first 24 hours after receiving your Botox injections, you will be asked to abstain from any strenuous activities and exercises, as well as avoiding sun exposure, touching your face, and lying down for the first 4 hours. This is to prevent any unwanted product migration that could lead to some annoying side effects. The botulinum toxin will start working after 1-3 days, but it may take up to a week for the final results to show. The effects of Botox will last around 3-4 months with maintenance appointments scheduled as needed.
