My Heavy Eyelids Are Affecting My Appearance. How Eyelid Surgery can Recapture Your Youth

My Heavy Eyelids Are Affecting My Appearance. How Eyelid Surgery can Recapture Your Youth

Drooping eyelids are a common side effect of the aging process. If droopy eyelids are interfering with your vision or affecting your appearance it may be time to consider eyelid surgery.

At Yco Facial Plastic Surgery in Encinitas, California, experienced facial plastic surgeon Mario Yco, MD, uses specialized techniques to remove excess eyelid skin to clear your vision and help your eyes look more alert.

Causes of droopy eyelids

Your skin contains essential proteins, such as collagen and elastin. As you get older, your body doesn’t produce as many of these proteins as it did in your youth. The lack of collagen and elastin can cause your skin to become loose and less flexible.

You may notice more wrinkles, creases, and sagging skin, especially over your eyes and around your face.

Additionally, fat deposits can become more noticeable in your upper and lower eyelids as you get older. This results from the weakening of a thin membrane that holds in place cushions of fat that support your eyeball.

Gravity also plays a role in droopy eyelids. The force of gravity can pull down on the skin over your eyes. As excess skinfolds form, they can interfere with your vision.

When to consider eyelid surgery

While you may be interested in eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) to restore the youthful look of your eyes, Dr. Yco may recommend this type of procedure if you’re experiencing vision issues because of overhanging skin.

Obstruction of your vision can increase your risk for accidents and injuries. You may also not be able to keep up with your responsibilities if hanging skin interferes with good eyesight.

We offer comprehensive eyelid evaluations to determine if eyelid surgery is right for you. Dr. Yco also discusses your expectations for surgery and reviews your medical history to ensure you’re a candidate for this type of surgery.

What to expect during eyelid surgery

During eyelid surgery, Dr. Yco makes incisions along the folds of your upper eyelids. Through these incisions, he can remove excess skin, tighten sagging muscles, and reposition fat deposits to eliminate the droopy appearance of one or both eyelids.

Dr. Yco makes the surgical incisions in precise locations on your upper eyelids to minimize your risk for noticeable scars.

Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure, and you can expect to go home soon after a brief period of recovery. You may need to use cool compresses to minimize swelling and avoid strenuous activity for at least 2-3 weeks to ensure your incisions heal properly.

Results after eyelid surgery

While you should notice a significant difference in the appearance of your eyelids after surgery, it can take a few weeks to see the final results. As swelling goes down and bruising fades away, the skin of your eyelids should be much tighter and smoother. Dr. Yco also includes UPNEEQ® postoperatively which is FDA approved for low-lying lids. It improves your upper field of vision and can be used to enhance the upper eyelid surgery results. It is also an excellent non surgical option.

Many people enjoy the youthful, more alert appearance of their eyes for years after surgery. Dr. Yco can recommend a skin care routine to support your long-term results.

You should also continue to exercise daily and eat a healthy diet to keep your skin healthy from the inside out.
